Celebrating International Girls in ICT Day 2025

Today, on International Girls in ICT Day 2025, we’re spotlighting one of our own – a former industrial placement student who is now a full-time member of the team at myairops. Her story is one of curiosity, persistence, and growth in a field where more young women are carving out exciting and meaningful careers.

Today, we are putting the spotlight on Shannon, Associate Software Engineer at myairops.

Discovering a Passion for Tech

My journey into ICT started back in school, where IT quickly became my favourite subject. I realised early on that I had a natural connection to the world of technology – it complemented key parts of my personality, like logical thinking, adaptability, and a love of constant learning. The more I explored, the more I knew this was the path for me.

Real-World Learning: My Placement Year

During my industrial placement, I had the opportunity to gain hands-on experience and develop both new and existing skills in areas like C#, Azure DevOps, Logic Apps, and Python. More than just technical growth, this year also boosted my confidence and gave me real insight into the kind of work that makes a difference.

The support from my team helped shape not just what I do, but how I approach challenges, collaborate with others, and continue to grow in a fast-moving industry.

The Joy of Building and Solving

What I love most about working in tech is the satisfaction of solving real problems and seeing the results come to life. There’s nothing quite like knowing that something you built is now out in the world, making a difference to others.

Words to Future Women in Tech

To any young women out there thinking about a future in ICT: go for it!
It’s genuinely the best career decision I’ve ever made. Yes, there’s a lot to learn at first – but don’t let that scare you. Start small, build your confidence, and stay curious. You can achieve anything you set your mind to.

Overcoming Challenges

One of the biggest recent challenges in my career was temporarily stepping into a data engineering role – a whole new world of processes and tools. It was tough at first, but I leaned on my team, used the documentation, and committed to learning everything I could. The experience left me more adaptable, capable, and confident in facing the unknown.

From Student to Full-Time Engineer

Now that I’ve transitioned from a placement student to a full-time engineer at myairops, it feels like my growth has accelerated even more. I’m continually learning, building, and contributing in meaningful ways – and getting to do all of this in the aviation industry makes it even more exciting.

At myairops, we’re proud to support and celebrate the growing community of women in ICT. On this International Girls in ICT Day, we hope this story inspires more girls to take that first step toward a future in technology.
